The big burger debate is that turkey burgers are clearly better for you than beef, but they lack flavor. Well, debate no more. The turkey burger recipe that I’ve been using packs flavor into turkey burgers that will make it easy to never eat beef again. They are that good.
The recipe is adapted from the Mar-a-Lago Turkey Burger, the specialty from Trump’s chef at his private club in Palm Beach. The recipe was revealed on Oprah’s favorite things back in 2008 and I have never made my own beef burger since.
I like to serve with Alexia’s All-Natural Sweet Potato Waffle Fries.
Tasty Turkey Burgers
(adapted from the Mar-a-Lago Turkey Burger)
- 1 onion, chopped fine
- 1 stalk finely chopped celery
- 1 apple, peeled and diced (preferably Granny Smith)
- 1/8 cup oil
- 2 pounds ground turkey breast
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. black pepper
- 1 tsp. hot sauce
- 1/2 lemon, juiced and grated zest
- 1 Tbsp. parsley, finely chopped (or dried)
- 1/4 cup Major Grey’s Chutney
Sauté the onion, celery and apple in oil until tender. Let cool.
Place the ground turkey in a large mixing bowl. Add sautéed items (cooled) and the remaining ingredients. Shape into eight 8-ounce burgers. Refrigerate for 2 hours (or freeze for later use).
Season the turkey burgers with salt and pepper. Place on a preheated, lightly oiled grill or pan. Cook each side for about 7 minutes until meat is thoroughly cooked. Let sit for 5 minutes.
Serving suggestions: serve with cheese, tomato, lettuce, and barbecue sauce.
